Meet the Keynote Speaker of the 27 May
98th anniversary Armenian independence event,
NORA KURDOGHLIAN from Athens - Greece

WHO IS Fethiye Çetin ?
She is a lawyer, writer and human rights activist.
Growing up, Fethiye Çetin had no reason to suspect that she had other than Turkish Muslim roots, until one day her maternal grandmother, Seher, revealed to her that she was by birth an Armenian Christian, named Heranuş Gadaryan, born to parents Hovannes and Isguhi Gadaryan, who had been taken away from her mother on a death march in the course of the Armenian Genocide and adopted by a Turkish military official, Hüseyin Çavuş, who was unable to have children.
This legacy inspired Çetin's first book, a recounting of her grandmother's story in the memoir entitled "My Grandmother."
The book, translated into English by Maureen Freely, has become demanded reading piece at some progressive Turkish institutes of higher education, such as Sabancı University.
Hugh Pope, reviewing the book for Today's Zaman, characterises the book as "part of a trend in Turkey that is grappling with a history of denial, nationalism and fears of political consequences" in regards to "the lost Armenians".
As a lawyer, Çetin has been representing the family of the murdered Turkish-Armenian newspaper editor Hrant Dink.

We are the "Melkonian Brothers’ Legacy Celebration Committee” (MBLCC): a diverse group of Melkonian Educational Institute alumni (with graduates from the 1950’s to late 1990’s), based in Los Angeles, California. We are a non-profit group and we rely solely on our own hard work and generosity, along with the generosity and support of our local and international alumni and extended Armenian community.
As Melkonian alumni, we consider our lives blessed and touched by the sheer generosity of two looming giants in recent Armenian history; the brothers Krikor and Garabed Melkonian.
In the chaos and aftermath of the Armenian genocide of 1915, they donated their entire, sizable fortune to help Armenian orphans, maintain Armenian culture and education and support the Armenian diaspora in the Middle East. Our beloved school, built by the brothers in Nicosia, Cyprus - originally as an orphanage - was one such historical beacon of hope. It is also the final resting place of the brothers Melkonian.
Now, almost a century later, we feel these selfless brothers, our heroes, that gave their all to Armenian orphans and the Armenian community at large - lie forgotten and neglected, as if orphaned by history themselves. They are part of Armenian history. Their legacy is our Armenian legacy: the school they built to cradle and nurture Genocide victims, their “Damparan”, the Genocide memorial forest around the school - planted by the orphans in memory of their lost loved ones, the “Madenataran” with priceless Armenian books from the late 1800’s and 1900’s, the villa where Garabed Melkonian lived his last days - simply cry out for our attention, our admiration and our respect.
Our sole purpose is to honor, pray for and celebrate the legacy of the brothers Melkonian, on this, the 90th anniversary of the founding of our school. To do so properly, we have organized an homage, a pilgrimage to Cyprus and our school, to simply pay our respects to our Armenian heroes, the brothers Krikor and Garabed Melkonian.
Working tirelessly and with the generosity and help from our committee, our alumni in Los Angeles, our international alumni and specially our alumni in Cyprus (and their gracious local tour company connections) - we have organized a phenomenal, packaged trip to Cyprus, from Thursday, July 14th to Thursday, July 22nd, 2016.
The 8-day trip includes 5-star hotel accommodations (4 days in Nicosia and 4 days in Protaras), almost all meals and alcoholic drinks included, local Armenian historical tours and events - culminating with a formal Gala celebration event on Melkonian school grounds with Melkonian alumni, Melkonian teachers and local Armenian and Cypriot government dignitaries.
A fitting 90th anniversary tribute to our benevolent benefactors, the brothers Melkonian.
For more information, detailed itinerary and package costs, please visit
We look forward to paying our respects, as well as spending time with our beloved fellow Melkonian alumni from all over the world, touring the island, enjoying local foods and drinks and some luxurious rest and relaxation at the beach to end our 2016 legacy celebration tour of Cyprus.
Please join us this summer, and tell your friends!
If you have prior commitments or you cannot travel for health or other reasons, or you would like to be a benefactor of the Gala event yourself, we invite you to donate, by contacting us at We appreciate and rely on the generosity of our fellow alumni and community to offset the costs of printing, mailing, sponsorships of Melkonian teachers and various costs that we have fully excluded from the trip costs to make it as affordable as possible for our alumni and their families to join us.
RSVP or call Maral Adourian Tel: +35799 469634
