HUNGARIAN AUTHORITIES RELEASE AXE MURDERER
ALIYEV PARDONS HIM ON ARRIVAL TO AZERBAIJAN

A huge crowd has welcomed home a convicted axe murderer to the Azeri capital of Baku.
Lieutenant Ramil Safarov, who returned to Baku on Friday, was jailed for life after hacking Armenian officer Gurgen Margarian to death in 2004 at a military academy in Budapest, where the servicemen were attending English-language courses organised by NATO.
Budapest agreed to extradite Safarov to Azerbaijan, but he was pardoned shortly after returning to his homeland.
Hungary, however, said that Azerbaijan had promised that the soldier would serve out the remainder of his sentence after his return home and would not be freed.
Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev issued an order that killer Safarov "should be freed from the term of his punishment" just after he arrived on a plane from Budapest.
The decision prompted harsh criticism and diplomatic action from Armenia, a longtime enemy of its neighbour Azerbaijan.
President Serzh Sarkisian of Armenia said on Friday, "I cannot put up with this. The Republic of Armenia cannot put up with this."
The country also severed its diplomatic ties with Hungary on Friday but Azerbaijan defended its decision.
"Ramil Safarov was pardoned in accordance with the constitution and laws
of Azerbaijan and the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons," presidential administration official Fuad Alekserov said in a statement.

In another move that will infuriate Armenia, Azerbaijan also reinstated Safarov to the army and promoted him to the rank of Major.
"Defence Minister Safar Abiyev received him, handed him his new rank and wished him success in his future military service," a Defence Ministry statement said.
Azerbaijan also hit back at US criticism, insisting that the pardon awarded to Safarov after he had served eight years of his sentence conformed with a European legal convention on extradition.
Tensions are strong between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh, a region of Azerbaijan that has been under the control of Armenian troops and ethnic Armenian forces since 1994.
About 150 demonstrators gathered in Yerevan on Saturday to set the Hungarian flag ablaze and demand an end to talks on resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh issue.

PROTESTERS IN YEREVAN BURN HUNGARIAN FLAGS AND THROW EGGS

On Saturday, hundreds of angry Armenian demonstrators chanted anti-Hungarian slogans during the protest rally in central Yerevan.
"The Hungarians have sold their honour and conscience to the Azerbaijanis like a common prostitute," protester Armen Mkrtchian told the AFP news agency.
The demonstrators also publicly burned Hungarian flags and distributed flyers that read "Hungary - have you gone mad?"
There were also reports that Armenian hackers attacked the officials website of Azerbaijan's president and several other internet news resources.
On Friday, Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian said that Hungary had made a "grave mistake" in sending Safarov back to Azerbaijan.
"With their joint actions, Azerbaijan and Hungary opened the door to the recurrence of such crimes. I cannot put up with this. The Republic of Armenia cannot put up with this," the president said.
The Hungarian authorities said they had returned Safarov to his homeland only after receiving assurances from the Baku government that his sentence would be enforced.

ASALA THREATENS TURKEY OVER SYRIA

Hurriyet Daily News - The Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA), an Armenian terrorist organization, has threatened to attack Turkey in the event of a “direct or indirect violation of the security” of the Armenian community in Syria, according to panarmenian.net.
ASALA released a statement saying they would launch "counter-measures" against Turkey if Ankara continued with its “conspirational and hostile policy" on Syria.
Active from 1975 to 1986, ASALA claimed responsibility for about 200 attacks on Turkish diplomatic and non-diplomatic institutions and murdered 58 Turkish and non-Turkish people, 34 of whom were Turkish diplomats. ASALA was listed as a terrorist organization by the United States until the 1980s, but was taken off the list when the group disbanded.
ASALA has been inactive since 1985.

WHAT GENOCIDE? TURKEY KNOWS NO SUCH THING SAYS EGEMEN BAGIS

egemen bağış

Turkey’s Minister for EU Affairs, Egemen Bagis made yet another amusing statement in connection with the Armenian Genocide.
During the official opening of an education facility, Bagis reflected on the addition of materials on the Genocide in the school textbooks of France, Milliyet daily of Turkey writes.
The Turkish Minister claimed that they, as Turks, are proud of their history and forebears.
“If only all countries’ past had been simple and transparent just like Turkey’s past. No genocides have occurred in Turkey’s history. What’s genocide? Turkey doesn’t know what genocide is,” said Egemen Bagis.

100,000 DOLLARS FROM ARS(HOM)
FOR SYRIAN-ARMENIAN SCHOOLS

The Central Executive Board of the Armenian Relief Society, Inc. announced that $100,000 in pledged donations have been received from its entities around the world to benefit its “Fund for Assistance to Syrian-Armenian Schools”. The first installment of these donations will be transferred to the Armenian Relief Cross of Syria in the next few days with the balance to follow later.
ARS, Inc. Chairperson Vicky Marashlian stated, “The ARS, Inc. was the first organization to launch a pan-Armenian fundraising effort to support the Syrian-Armenian community and we established the “Fund for Assistance to Syrian-Armenian Schools”. It was announced that all proceeds will be allocated to cover the tuitions of students. Despite the international financial crisis and its effects on numerous countries with Armenian communities, ARS members spared no effort and raised sizeable donations for this fund. On this occasion and on behald of the ARS, Inc. Central Executive Board, I would like to thank all ARS members, executives and ARS supporters, who headed the ARS call and participated in this fundraiser.”
The disbursement of donations collected through this pan-Armenian effort will be supervised by the Armenian Relief Cross of Syria in consultation with ARS, Inc. Central Executive Board and in cooperation with the Armenian Apostolic, Catholic, and Evangelical churches.
“Questions were raised on more than one occasion on why a fund for assistance to schools, when their re-opening is in doubt and when the Armenian community in Syria is in dire need of socio-economic assistance. The ARS, Inc. Central Executive Board is aware that preparations are underway to re-open the schools, albeit with some delays and arrangements are being discussed to conform to the realities on the ground. On the other hand, by funding the schools, the ARS, Inc. is serving two goals, to alleviate the financial burden to be faced by parents and, at the same time, to support the schools because without that financial support schools will have difficulty in securing their normal operation,” said ARS, Inc. CEB Vice-chairperson Nairy Shahinian.
Considering that a pan-Armenian effort to assist the Syrian-Armenian community was recently launched, bringing together many Armenian religious and secular organizations and institutions, the ARS will continue its effort to assist the Syrian-Armenian community through that effort.

MEET PATRIK BABOUMIAN

Born in Iran to Armenian parents, Patrik Baboumian always knew he wanted to become an international strongman. One of his fondest memories with his father, now deceased, was watching the Incredible Hulk rip off his shirt and magically transform into a green robust monster. At the age of seven, the hopeful athlete moved with his mother and grandmother to Germany, where he began to cultivate his skill for strength.
Shortly after breaking the German heavyweight loglift record last year, the sportsman achieved the title of Germany’s “Strongest Man.” The current world log lift record-holder in the 105k-category (165 kg), Baboumian has plans to triumph in the World’s Strongest Man competition this month.

WELCOME TO THE TENNIS ZONE

I feel especially privileged to inform you that my partner Stelios Christofides and myself have won the contract to start a new tennis training centre on the grounds of the Junior School, Nicosia, as from Monday 3 September.
In addition to classes for all levels, from beginners to competition level, in small groups or private, our training centre will also develop top class players of a standard to benefit from university scholarships.
Already, some of the island's top junior players have enrolled at the training centre and are practicing under the guidance of our Head Coach and Technical Director Akis Asproftas, one of Cyprus' best coaches, who has consistently produced a number of top players both in Cyprus and in Greece.
Our programme will include lectures from qualified professionals in sports psychology, sports nutrition and strength and endurance training with the aim of helping children to be the best that they can be.
Our excellent facilities consist of four floodlit tennis courts, in a green park setting surrounded by trees, jogging tracks and other sports grounds.
